The new legislation that the previous government introduced with such a fanfare of pandering and hypocrisy has had some serious effects on the industry that as far as I was aware were never part of the original bill and savour of the kind of unfairnes anyone in the industry has grown only too used to.
Clubs are being priced out of existence, up to £10k licensing fees charged per club, the original bill had nothing about this and it seems to be a desparate attempt to make such extra cash out of the inudstry while it can. The touted bill simply want to control club numbers, why the increase in fees and where do they go? In the current environment the money will take any money it can get…
Established clubs in selected councils will be made to re-apply for the license they have help for up to 20 years, how will the councils make this choice. No provision was made on the bill, see above.
The same old talk of clubs being controled because of disturbance to local residents, when will the authorities realise that the vast amount of strip and lap dancing clubs have much less drunkeness and bad behaviour and noise than most regular night clubs, strip clubs cant win. Either they are next to regular clubs and 24 hour pubs and get tarred with the same brush or are elsewhere and protesters say they are too near (delete as applicable) : school, church, old persons home or some treasured landmark.
With a million civil servants set for the dole in the next year or so, who will be taking on the extra work of enforcing this bill and where will the extra cash be coming from?

The same survey which said that 1 in 4 strippers had a university degree also concludes that most strippers are happy in their jobs, not addicted to drugs nor the products of human traffic. Nothing we did not know there…
There are has been mounting pressure to close clubs in Edinburgh for the Popes visit, the usual backlash describing the place as seedy despiet having only 2 clubs along the whole route, in a spectacular overreaction there were even worries that Lothian Road and Tollcross nick name ‘stab city’ would put people off, what kind of gathering were they expecting?
Wayne Rooney – Gone are the days where footballers got into hot water for a night at their local strip club, more money and less intelligent players just means they think money can buy silence.

Paul Raymond has been all over the news this week due to a biog just released, but who was he really? For some he was the face of stripping in the UK, his London club was as part of the skyline in the capital as Big Ben.
We are of course much more used to the face of Peter Stringfellow, his media friendly chat, dire fashion sense and hair but Paul Raymond seems to have been much more a Howard Hughes character, shadowy and eccentric making billions of pounds having magazine titles that were household names in the UK and beyond. His past was just as shadowy with a confusing mix of truth and fable in what he told the media, in his last years he became a virtual hermit following his wifes death, becoming the richest man in the country beating royalty having a fortune of £1.5 billion while staying down to earth enough to chat to employees at all levels.
Paul Raymond was so famous that his phone was bugged by the authorities, targeted by the IRA and by Mary Whitehouse types. Personal trajedy such as drugs death of his daughter led him to retreat from the limelight in the 90s.
Paul Raymond was a true character, expect the movie any time from now! He helped bring the industry out of the darkness of Soho onto every high street in the country, would lap dancing have been possible without his vision?
