Stringfellows: In Court Again

A stripper at Stringfellows of London is taking the club to court for wrongful dismissal in, what could turn out to be, a landmark case. Nadine Quashie is the first dancer/performer in the industry to take a club to court after being dimissed for drug allegations.

Quashie also claims to have been threatened, not by Stringfellows but by a group acting ‘in the good of the strip industry’. These letters have passed to the Police.

The interesting thing is that strippers, in terms of tax, are seen as being self employed so cannot take their employers to court for wrongful dismissal. The case is now at tribunal to allow her to challenge the previous ruling and try for compensation for the club. Anyone dismissed from a club will be watching with interest. As with the tax issue where dancers were seen as self employed and had to pay their own tax its unlikely that the dancers will get things their own way since they accepted the state of things and their status.

Tower Hamlets Join Bandwagen

In the weeks news, another local council join the bandwagen to turn the screw on clubs. Tower Hamlets has made a bid to close all of their venues across the board. They come up with the usual vague reasons about young children living in the area and city centre people coming in to enjoy themselves and running off home etc. No matter that these clubs offer the local people jobs and keep units open and, the fact that these clubs are not run, on the most part by the big chains will see them easier to shut down than than city centre ones with financial and PR clout, which cant have escaped them notice.

As ever it is the smaller, independant clubs which are at risk not the big chains.

Tower Hamlets is just one of the local councils making noises about closing clubs, or reducing numbers. Why do clubs concentrate into clumps like Tower Hamlets, Soho or the centre of Birmingham? Demand? Suitable locations? The government and anti strip lobby were against clubs spreading out into remote towns, so why are they now against the centres of the industry?

Fees Too High? Students To Strip

This story has it all, something for everyone really. John Specht the Vice CEO of the Spearmint Rhino chain in the UK has been drumming up free press coverage by suggesting that hard up students take up stripping and lap dancing to pay for rising fees.

Of course we know that a large proportion of performers are students, but with rising student fees and a full on recession on the way its fair to say there will only be more. Specht has pushed all the right buttons, raising the Rhino’s profile, winding up ladies/student spokespeople by suggsting its ‘fun’ and put the though into a few heads.

Will the doctors, lawyers and maybe politicians of tomorrow have something in their past they would rather people didnt know? The stigma that the industry has doesnt look like going away any time soon.

Which Way Will The Industry Go

Making over £2 billion every year and employing over 25,000 people the strip industry should really have some clout. Apart from that it should have some respect from being around for over (depending on how you term it) 50 years. What say does the industry have over legislation and council licensing?

Not much obviously. The strip and lap dancing industry is still treated like the evil twin of cheap city centre pubs, they can be closed down or denied a license without explanation by people who have never visited the site venue. No matter how little trouble there is, there is always an easy story ready for local press and tabloids.

With most entertainment venues the public decide whether a company survives or folds but, but strip venues are not left to market forces alone. It makes you wonder how many clubs there could actually be in the UK if the government didnt reduce venue numbers?

With new venues opening in Birmingham and Glasgow it makes you wonder what the industry would be like if left to itself. Has the new legislation actually reduced club numbers much? The numbers are almost the same so that remains to be seen, if the powers that be thought there would be an explosion in venue numbers they were wrong. The industry is over legislated and over controlled by people that dont understand or are down right hostile.

Man Dies Outside Club In Cannes France

A 37 year old married man from London has died after an argument outside a strip club with three French men. He had been drinking in a local club which he left afer a disagreement about bar prices. He then continued the argument outside where he was joined by his friends, after a brawl with 3 local men he collapsed on the road of the posh Riviera resort.

When was someone killed outside a UK Club? It seems to happen in and around US clubs avery month or so, usually in a spray of gunfire, and now France. Had it happened in the UK the UK media would be looking to taint the industry, it makes good press inches to do the strip industry down after all. As I am always saying security and order in and around strip venues is actually much better than the average busy pub due to stricter admittance policies, CCTV, door staff and the attitude of punters. Do UK clubs have much higher standard than Overseas clubs?

When was the last time a running battle between venue staff, passers by, patrons and friends outside resulted in a death outside a UK club?
