Writing this blog can be a bit tricky some mornings. You know, lack inspiration, finding something to say about the industry that is interesting etc. That said the media, and their blinkered/biased view of it can make my life a lot easier. There are some spectacularly poor journos out there with a thinly veiled agenda, helped sometimes by whatever government is in power providing them ammo for their soft target articles. This week is even easier!
The gist of the article this week is that the strip industry is to blame for the current recession (read everything thats wrong in the world today!) and if High Streets up and down the country had more bookshops, restaurants and butchers there would be some sort of miracle recovery. They lump kebab shops, bookies and strip clubs into one undesirable mass that is blighting our inner cities. Genius! Forget that High Streets and popular shopping and social areas of any city are governed by the law of the jungle ie that businesses that can afford it will get the best placing and ones that dont have to make do. Forget that there have probably been endless of those types of business on those streets which have gone bust.
Some people will say its just a sniffy way for the Nanny State media to comment on the things we do! Dont go to strip club or a bookmaker, go to a restaurant (is a kebab shop not a restaurant?) or buy a book (of their choice of course). Worst of all it is saying that the way to get back to the glory days of 2007 (same amount of strip clubs then by the way) is by replacing legal businesses which make money with ones that dont, and cant afford the premises (because if they did they would already be there). Apart from all that there are numerous stories of local inhabitants being happy having a club nearby, visable security at night times, premises not vacant, more money in the community etc.
Although I suppose if you are a Guardian reader/journo and you drive down your local High Street you will be less likely to stop if they have strip clubs, bookies and kebab shops. Especially if the wife and kids are in the car… Next week how to end unemployment using yogic flying and green tea, an end to world poverty by proper recycling. Honestly how stupid are these people? How dumb do they think we are? None of these people have run a business, and none of them probably live anywhere near a strip club.
Theres something Soviet era Russia about this, wiping unsightly features from our city centres to be replaced by state sponsored middle classness. You can read the whole thing and see what I am on about Guardian and make your own mind up. Grrrr!

According to The Independant one in four lap dancers has a degree and they are motivated by money. Wow inciteful! At least some graduates are getting jobs though and paying off their student loans, the industry doesnt get the credit for that. They even make a back handed compliment that lap dancers are not coerced into it, they are motivated by cash and ahem career. Anyone who has been to a club wont be arguing with that one.
It goes without saying that the rest of the article (by way of balance of course) fullfills the usual stereotypes, paranoias and libels that usually beset (you can tell I’ve been reading The Independant) the industry. They cant just state the facts and maybe add an editorial word or two they have to take figures that disprove everything they stand for and twist them to their agenda. No change there!
Makes you wonder what the precentage of journalists with degrees is, cant imagine its one in four. Unless you get one free with their cigarette coupons.

In the news this week. Ex mayor Ken Livingstone is looking to close strip clubs around London. He is the New Labour candidate for the job and has been quite outspoken on a number of issues, he has come out in the press with borderline homophobic comments and now seems to want to use the recent legislation to close at least some of the venues under his control.
Despite being allied once again to the Labour cause who were in charge when, according to certain people, lap dancing ‘changed the landscape of our inner cities’ he is pledging to close as many as he can. Usually a crusade against the industry is a cry for attention from the back benches playing to galleries, but actually making it part of a mayoral campaign? Closing down legal businesses, heavily regulated, paying a lot of money to the country’s coffers? Ken Livingstone has never gone along with common consensus, always fighting the power. But strip clubs?
Im sure venues in London will be watching this one quite closely.

These days the strip and lap dancing industry needs to stick together, it needs a central resource which helps punters to get the info they need about clubs in their area and helping venues to reach out. Its only another 6 weeks to April fools day, so its not that then although I did have to check! Stephen Hawking the worlds top Physicist and author of Brief History of Time has been revealed as a strip club aficionado who likes nothing better than a lap dance in the surroundings of an exclusive Californian club. Who would have thought it?
If Stephen Hawking can make it out to patronise his local venue then why cant more of us?
Maybe Professor Hawkins could explain why dances always seem to be shorter than they should do and why theres a black hole in my finances after a visit? Dont know if I quite believe this one. In the week the press got banged to rights for tapping phones, and ended up with paying our millions to various celebs this one has crept under the radar. Remember Freddie Starr?
