Strip news for the last few weeks sees few new venues but Hooters the US ‘restaurant’ chain are planning 3 new venues for the UK, Brighton, Cardiff and Bristol should be opened in the news few months with add to the existing one in Nottingham opened a few years ago.

Will the same draconian level of legislation be applied to these as to the average strip clubs? No probably not. Many venues in the UK are topless which is not really much difference to that lets face it. Maybe a big US chain can get round it. The same feminista backlash will be in evidence that the strip industry has seen in the last 10 years, the same organisations, the same names and the same blind accusations.

Could be an answer to the industry clubs having restaurants with ‘hostesses’ in skimpy dress, a la Bunny Clubs of yesteryear. Venues need to move on and see a gap in the market and get around legislation that seems to grow ever more repressive every year.

Hybrid clubs with strip or lap dancing on one level and another level with hostesses in the Hooters style could be the way forward.

So, Job Centres have banned listings for strip clubs and lap dancing clubs. They claim this to stop exploitation of young people, but we know different. This is one of the invented, scandalous slurs on the industry that is trotted out whenever they want to score points against the industry, there has never been a proof of venues employing under age performers. Just another repression along with the banning or taxi livery from venues. The most interesting part of the BBC article was that there are 30,000 lap dancers in the UK, enough for fair treatment surely? Does the UK government want to criminalise all these people?

The industry is worth £2 billion and can we really see the new government keeping up the repression on the industry which seems to be going from strength to strength? In view of the cuts all across the civil service and public services I personally think they could channelled their energies into something more useful: schools, hospitals and law and order rather than having digs at a legal and long established industry which has risen in the last 20 years to become established in every town in the country.

I am not suggesting that the strip industry will single handedly save the UK from the recession but spending our money to repress it can hardly offer good value for a country facing a double dip recession. We can see from history that when times get tough the people in charge usually opt for a back to basics (remember that?) policy picking out a few targets (lap dancing, cheap alcohol, drugs etc) and make all the right noises about them whether they are really the problem or not. If you think of the 80s you think of the Tories war on football hooliganism, is the strip industry really to be compared to that?

The new strip legislation came in April and I have not heard much against, it. Not the apocalypse I personally expected Clubs are still opening. The changes were purely to pander to a few individuals who hate the industry-feministas, religious types and a few other rotters who dont have much fun. It seems Gordon Brown and co have spent all that time and not changed a hell of a lot as far as clubs are concerned. Criminalised dancers might think different of course.

1/ Individual councils still have the ability to overrule objections which we will hear a lot more about about, although it may be linked to money (see below).

2/ Clubs need to pay a hopping £10k a year in renewals and licences. Apart from acknowledging that the industry is strong by slapping that arbitrary price tag on it they have ensured that skint councils will see them as a rather fabulous source of revenue. This might even see a rise in venue numbers when the financial climate changes.

So after the millions of pounds that it will have cost the UK taxpayer to get that useless, unfair bit of legislation through nothing has changed. More loop holes, junk legislation and hot air. The government had to seem as though they were doing something and they did, they had to hand onto a vast wedge of revenue which they have done!
