Apart form putting the industry in a more unisex light its free publicity! Clubs must put their thinking caps on constantly to get this stuff in the press. Ladies nights are nothing new but they put a new spin on the whole thing to get a page on the Star website.

One of the things I always go on and on about on this blog is the one sided or quite random treatment the industry gets, whether its hackneyed exposees, the same old stories of danger and disruption around clubs or the feminista element who just want all clubs closed down and will say anything to get it. Maybe we are seeing a pattern though, in the last few weeks I have read a complimentary story on Spearmint Rhinio and now Secrets (the UK’s leading groups of clubs) and the same story after story about smaller clubs that run the same old defamitory course. I mean the press dont even try to be even handed with smaller clubs. Big chains with a bit of financial muscle and top lawyers get preferrential articles full of compliments (not that i’m denying them that) and smaller single clubs get mud slung at them and no come back.

Either clubs have to get together and stick together to fight the press or someone has to ensure they get a fair crack at the whip, with all this legislation we see introduced every day can we expect some protection? Compare football and strip clubs, big clubs are always the target of the media seen as extravagent and decadent. Smaller clubs are seen as the last bastion of the game and the roots of the community. With strip clubs the opposite is true, smaller clubs are seen as easy meat for slander and the media can say anything they want with impunity while bigger clubs can expect the benefits of free PR and gratis column inches. Money talks of course but both groups work in the same industry. That is the problem the industry has on its hands, and all for one and one for all-what is bad for smaller clubs is also bad for the big groups.

Raising the profile of the industry is not the same as gaining a new reputation, with the industry still surviving even with the new legislation and clubs making more money than ever it is time to think smart and get together!

Spearmint Rhino could be opening a new venue in Glasgow 2 years after the original affiliate venue. With the chains profits up by a third in the last year so it looks like the industry could be seeing the light at the end of tunnel. The site in Drury Street was previously known as The Truffle Club and Spearmint Rhino Rouge.

Please note. The fact about the rise in Rhino profits was actually taken from a feminist organisation renta-quote whose crap website I wont boost by giving the name of. The interesting point being, how would the funding of these organisations be affected by a blanket ban on strip clubs? If they got their way would they still be able to raise cash about the awfulness of the industry and mens latent sexism and Freudian insecurities. I mean if an organisation which derives its very existence from an industry is it not hypocritical to talk about profit when they are almost certainly paying their household bills from stirring up trouble about the industry. No strip clubs, no new legislation, no feminista renta-quote. Dont try too hard dear.

I suppose the whole industry could be explained like that. The media stir up notoriety, people visit clubs, clubs make money, organisations spring up against the industry (including beaten wives, rape and equality), media stir up more trouble, government get involved creating pointless legislation, people keep going to clubs etc.

What would happen if punters stopped going to clubs then? MPs cant use it as a rallying cry, no funding for one eyed feminist organisations, dancers on the dole, venues reverting to vacancy or chain pub hell. Given that people say one thing and mean another even when they spend ages typing it out or posting it, they do protest too much and the industry is safer than ever. As long as people are protesting about the industry, as long as everyone no matter how unrelated has an opinion, as long as koudos is up for grabs, clubs keep paying tax and the media set aside a certain amount of column inches to the clubs the industry is safe.
