The number of clubs in the capital is to be reduced further. Despite whatn the press want everyone to think there was not a explosion of club numbers in London after the lap dancing boom of the 90s. There are actually less venues with licensing and more reductions are planned. Forget rising club numbers and a recent clampdown using the new legislation, the campaign against clubs is nothing new and with the environment of repression the industry feels the screw is being turned.
Using local by-laws councils can permanantly revoke a licence if a venue has been shut for 6 months and the Royal Lancasters, Club Rouge and Legends have all fallen foul of this rule, with venues re-opening and closing all the time this could see a good few clubs closing-and their license now being reassigned elsewhere thus seeing venue numbers dwindle.
The other side of this, this local story I had to double take on this one! Residents praise club and are delighted that license has been renewed…compare to their local High Street which looked like ‘downtown Baghdad’. Maybe other clubs could learn a bit about PR from Stir in Epsom!
I have always said that venues are better regulated than other night clubs, I dont think Stir will be unique in that.

Stripping in the news this week. I have had a look at the stories which cover stripping, lap dancing, pole dancing and table dancing and I cant be too positive in the direction we are going. Closing clubs, raids, church types crowing at a denied club license and a few of the usual feminista stories that do the rounds every few weeks. Nothing positive I can take.
Spearmint Rhino cut its losses for 2010 to just a tenth of the previous at £190,000 and other clubs are closing faster than they are opening. Any benefit that could have been felt by the return of bankers bonuses are not being spread around the industry, as usual the big London clubs get the biggest share of the profits for the stability in the economy.
So what can we say on the bright side? The legislation brought in to stymie the industry has not had the effect we had feared, nor has the recession damaged the industry as much as others, although now it looks like the doom and gloom is having a trickle down effect. The actual total number of clubs is pretty much the same at just over 300 for the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
The media have been going crazy with negative predictions for the economy, so does that mean we can expect a let up in the hate campaign against it? It does not look like it, and if we have learned anything from the past it is that easy targets become even more attractive when times get harder, even if there are many more productive targets!
