Explosion In Club Numbers?

Stripping in the news for this week, well the BBC article I read tried to claim that there will be no more new venues in London and also took the false view club numbers have doubled to 300 since 2004 which is of course false, club numbers have not risen that much since UK Strip Clubs started in 2005, rising from just under 300 to just over 350 now. If you include every change of name and move of address then you could fiddle the figures in that way though….

One of the common tricks the media use to try to score points from the industry, is to hype the rise in the number of venues in the UK, which is the basically the same as 2005. The other one is to bring in the feminist angle, there will always be plenty of ex-strippers wanting to be interviewed to say things about the industry, out of 100,000 currently working the industry the number is the same as any other job.

The disorder and drunken behaviour is another method of doing the industry down. Anyone who goes to late license pubs or a regular night clubs will know the folly of that assumption, there is the story of pricey flats near a prominent club in London being more popular with females since there was always doormen and a CCTV in evidence to protect them, hardly street crawlers and drunken rapists running wild.

I suppose with the cuts in the BBC budget we cannot now be expecting deep and balanced journalism now, if we ever did. What we are not expecting is the dogma and column filling of the local press whose only reason for existing is to pander to small minded locals and selling advertising in the process. The strip industry is still an easy target and that wont change.

New Legislation Changes For 2010

The new legislation that the previous government introduced with such a fanfare of pandering and hypocrisy has had some serious effects on the industry that as far as I was aware were never part of the original bill and savour of the kind of unfairnes anyone in the industry has grown only too used to.

Clubs are being priced out of existence, up to £10k licensing fees charged per club, the original bill had nothing about this and it seems to be a desparate attempt to make such extra cash out of the inudstry while it can. The touted bill simply want to control club numbers, why the increase in fees and where do they go? In the current environment the money will take any money it can get…

Established clubs in selected councils will be made to re-apply for the license they have help for up to 20 years, how will the councils make this choice. No provision was made on the bill, see above.

The same old talk of clubs being controled because of disturbance to local residents, when will the authorities realise that the vast amount of strip and lap dancing clubs have much less drunkeness and bad behaviour and noise than most regular night clubs, strip clubs cant win. Either they are next to regular clubs and 24 hour pubs and get tarred with the same brush or are elsewhere and protesters say they are too near (delete as applicable) : school, church, old persons home or some treasured landmark.

With a million civil servants set for the dole in the next year or so, who will be taking on the extra work of enforcing this bill and where will the extra cash be coming from?
